We get a lot of school groups. We like to take them round in groups of ten to fifteen. Usually the students are aged under twelve and want to find out about life in the 19th or early 20th Centuries. Helping to educate and entertain over 4,000 students a year can be very rewarding. We also operate a loans service whereby we lend artefacts to local schools.         


Key elements of the role

  • Meet and greet school groups
  • Guide children around the museum
  • Help with loan items for school



At the Milton Keynes Museum we understand that people only have a limited amount of free time. Therefore any commitment, you can make will be gratefully received.


School tours usually take place Monday to Fridays during school term times

What we are looking for


  • Good communication skills and confidence in talking with visitors
  • Commitment to excellent customer service
  • Common sense
  • Attention to detail
  • An interest in the museum and its ongoing story
  • Works well under pressure
  • Team worker
  • An interest in working with schools and students


Training and induction

  • Full induction to the site and history
  • Shadowing other volunteers
  • Ongoing training will be provided as and when necessary
  • Full training given on how to lead school groups
  • Full training on school loan items
