A warm welcome can set the tone for a visitor. Visitors usually like to take home a memento or gift, so a well-stocked shop with a wide range of goods, attractively displayed and at reasonable prices is a ‘must’.


Key elements of the role

  • Give a warm welcome to visitors to the museum
  • Keep the shop clean, tidy and well stocked
  • Serve visitors both on admissions and retail.
  • Orientate visitors on entry
  • Use a till and handle cash
  • Maintain leaflet carousel
  • Work in the post office selling sweets.



At the Milton Keynes Museum we understand that people only have a limited amount of free time. Therefore any commitment, you can make will be gratefully received.


The shop team needed are from Wednesday to Sunday when the museum is open from April to October and weekends November to March. Shop hours usually 10.30 to 4.45. The museum is also open seven days a week during school half-terms and on bank holidays.


What we are looking for

  • An interest in gaining experience in retail
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence in talking with visitors
  • Commitment to excellent customer service
  • Common sense
  • Attention to detail
  • An interest in the museum and its ongoing story
  • Works well under pressure
  • Team worker


Training and induction

  • Full induction to the site and history
  • Shadowing other volunteer
  • Ongoing training will be provided as and when necessary
  • Full training given on till and other aspects of the shop.
